PHNOM PENH, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) — China has been playing an active role in helping developing countries around the world to boost their economies and reduce poverty, a Cambodian government official said here on Saturday.
“I have observed that China has made a lot of contributions to countries around the world, including Cambodia, to boost economic development and reduce poverty,” Kao Kim Hourn, Minister Attached to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, said in a press conference when Hun Sen returned from China, where he attended the Global Poverty Reduction and Development Forum.
For Cambodia, he said China has assisted the country in economic development and poverty reduction via providing grant aid and concessional loans and investing a huge amount of money in many sectors that have created numerous jobs for Cambodians.
Kao Kim Hourn added that the China’s proposed “Belt and Road” initiative, which is backed by the Silk Road Fund and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), would be an effective way to help countries along the route to develop economies and reduce poverty.
Also, he said Chinese President Xi Jinping’s pledge of 2 billion U.S. dollars for South-South cooperation during a United Nations General Assembly in New York on Sept. 26 would also be a huge contribution to global poverty reduction and development.
